The Kakamega forest is a small patch of virgin forest in western Kenya. It has dense vegetation and endemic giant trees. There are many different species of birds and monkeys.

Typical upland vegetation decorates the slopes of Mount Elgon, where one can find one of the largest tropical rainforests in the world. The climate varies according to altitude, which is about 1,200 m, and the winds off the lake.

Another area where one can find thick forest cover, is the rift valley region where forests such as the Mau forest, which is one of the five water towers of kenya, and an important sanctuary for extremely rare species of flora and fauna.

The central highlands also present an area where one can find a dense concentration of tropical rainforests. Forests such as the Aberdares and Mount Kenya are situated within the region. The forests are home to a wide range of animal and plant species.

There are also several planted forests such as the karura forest, which is kenya’s largest planted forest. It is located less than fifteen minutes away from the CBD. Various activities can be done in the area, including picnics, hiking and tree planting.
