THE OSCARS SELECTION COMMITTEE KENYA SUBMITS THE FILM: MISSION TO RESUE TO REPRESENT KENYA IN THE CATEGORY OF BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM AT THE 94TH ACADEMY AWARDS – 2022

Following the close of the call for entries in the Best Foreign Language Film Award category for the 94th Academy Awards (Oscars) 2022, The Oscars Selection Committee Kenya received four entries that is Mission to Rescue, Bangarang, Kiapo and Mukami.

All films met most of the required specifications and were recorded as duly received and on Thursday 14th to 15th October 2021, the Selection Committee convened to view the entries as required by the regulations of The Academy.

After evaluating the 4 films, the Oscars selection Committee has settled on the Film Mission to rescue by Foxton Media the Kenya Selection for the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy awards

Mission to rescue is a Kenyan movie set along the Kenya- Somali border; the Kenya Special Operations Forces who are training for their next mission receive word that the Assistant County Commissioner and two others have been abducted by the Al-Shabaab militia. Mission to rescue stems from the story of a French woman who was kidnapped by the Al-Shabaab. The idea seeks to highlight the effects of radicalization within the community that aim to curb terrorism.

The film’s star-studded cast features; Melvin Alusa, Warsame Abdi, Abdi Yusuf, Emmanuel Mugo, Andreo Kamau, Abubakar Mwenda, Sam Psenjen, Anthony Ndung’u, Bilal Mwaura, Justin Mirichi, Abajah Brian, Melissa Kiplagat, Brian Ogola, and Mwamburi Maole.

As is required, the Commission established the Kenya Oscars selection committee that reflects membership as per guidelines given. The current members who assumed office in 2020 include:

  1. Krysteen Savane – KFTPA (OSCK Chairperson)
  2. Alamin Virani – KAG (OSCK Secretary)
  3. Fatma Wandia – Producers Guild
  4. Dennis Mbuthia – Association of Animation Artists Kenya
  5. Wycliffe Buhere – AFPEIK
  6. Patricia Mataga – Writers Guild
  7. Mwendwa Mutua – Riverwood Ensemble
  8. Emily Wanja – DOCUBOX-EADFF (EA Documentary Film Fund)
  9. Albert Wandago – Kenya National Film Association
  10. Serah Mwihaki – Kenya Scriptwriters guild

The Commission approved the above members on the Oscars platform as per requirement.

The Kenya Film Commission is mandated to market, develop and promote a vibrant film industry globally. In line with its mandate, the Commission has been officially recognized by the Academy of Motion pictures, Arts and Sciences (The Oscars) to set up an Oscars Selection Committee from the industry associations and guilds to make submissions for the Best International Feature Film Category Awards on behalf of the Kenya film industry.

The nominees for the 94th Academy Awards will be announced by the Academy on Tuesday, 8 February 2022.

KFC together with the committee is keen to see more entries in the running to represent the country at the Academy Awards whose specifications are available on the Kenya Film Commission Website.
