For two weeks from April 28 to May 10, 2025, Siaya County was alive with creativity and energy as over 200 young filmmakers participated in the Siaya Film Capacity Building Workshop, a hands-on training organized by the Commission. The workshop was designed to empower emerging creatives with practical filmmaking skills and expose them to industry-standard tools and mentorship.
The program was hosted at the Siaya Digital Hub, located in Bondo Town, with professional training by facilitators from the Kenya Film School. Participants gained intensive experience in storytelling, pre-production, cinematography, directing, and editing with a strong emphasis on collaboration and creativity.
The workshop drew participants from key leadership at the Kenya Film Commission, led by the Chairman Mr. Sudi Wandabusi, Commissioner Dr. Lucia Nzoongo, and CEO Timothy Owase, along with Mr. Maricus Ahomo, Principal of Bondo Technical Training Institute.
Prof. Emily Akuno, Vice Chancellor of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), welcomed the KFC team and lauded the initiative’s role in nurturing creative minds, underscoring the institution’s commitment to innovation in the arts. “As an institution, we are proud to be associated with efforts that nurture creative minds,” she stated.
As a result of the program, five original short films were produced by participants and screened during the graduation ceremony a celebrated moment of creativity, collaboration, and regional storytelling. The impact was immediate and meaningful, with many participants sharing that their confidence, skills, and career aspirations had grown significantly.
The workshop concluded with a vibrant closing ceremony at Bondo Technical Training Institute. Distinguished guests in attendance included Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, the Russian Ambassador to Kenya among other county leaders.
Kenya Film Commission extends gratitude to all the partners, facilitators, and community members who made this initiative a success especially the County Government of Siaya, Siaya Digital Hub, Bondo Technical Training Institute, and the dynamic creatives of Siaya County.
