Over 700 Entries Mark the 7th Women in Film Awards Held in Nairobi, Kenya

The Kenya Film Commission participated in the 7th edition of the Women in Film Awards Kenya, an event that brought together filmmakers, creatives, industry leaders and supporters of the arts to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women working across Kenya’s film, television and digital content industries.

Held on March 13, 2026, the event was organized under the theme “Access Granted: Women Filmmakers Driving Innovation in the Creative Economy.” The theme emphasized the need to strengthen opportunities for women in the film and television industry while promoting gender equity, inclusion in leadership and storytelling, and greater visibility for women filmmakers and technical professionals.

The awards ceremony recognized excellence across 23 public voting categories, highlighting outstanding work in acting, directing, producing, cinematography, editing, animation, digital content creation and other technical production roles. This year’s edition recorded strong participation from across the industry, attracting more than 700 submissions, over 100 nominees and more than 10,000 public voters — a sign of the growing recognition of women’s contributions within the creative sector.

During the ceremony, the Kenya Film Commission CEO, Timothy Owase delivered a keynote address that highlighted the importance of inclusivity, innovation and continued capacity development within Kenya’s film and creative sectors. The Commission also presented several awards to winners, reinforcing institutional recognition of excellence among women filmmakers and creatives.

Beyond the stage, the event provided an opportunity for engagement with filmmakers, producers and creative organizations advocating for gender equity within the industry. The Commission’s presence at the event reinforced its commitment to supporting talent development, industry recognition and inclusive growth within Kenya’s audiovisual landscape.

The awards once again served as an important platform for celebrating women’s achievements and their growing influence in shaping Kenya’s creative economy. The CEO noted that the Film Commission’s participation reflects its continued commitment to supporting initiatives that promote innovation, inclusivity and the overall growth of the country’s film industry.

Dr Susan Gitimu, WIFA Founder notes, “This year’s awards not only celebrated excellence but also reinforced the importance of creating access, visibility, and opportunities for women in the creative sector, and WIFA continues to shine a spotlight on these incredible women.
