Empowering the next generation of Virtual Production Pioneers

The Film Commission celebrated the graduation of 12 trainees from a 12-week Virtual Production Bootcamp run in partnership with Konza Technopolis and Genesis Design Factory. The ceremony, held at Genesis Design Factory, was graced by Eng. John Tanui, Principal Secretary in the State Department of ICT and the Digital Economy alongside distinguished guests, partners, and industry stakeholders.

For twelve weeks, the trainees immersed themselves in Virtual Studios, Extended Reality (XR), and Augmented Reality (AR)—technologies at the heart of a rapidly evolving global creative industry. The program went beyond technical training; it equipped the participants with the creativity, confidence, and innovation needed to position Kenya as a leader in virtual production and the wider digital economy. One graduate captured the spirit of the journey, reflecting: “This program has transformed the way I see storytelling. With these new tools, I can merge creativity and technology to produce stories that can stand on the global stage.”

The highlight of the graduation was an innovative showcase of the trainees’ projects, which demonstrated how virtual production can be applied beyond film and entertainment. A Virtual Election Results Broadcast reimagined how immersive sets and real-time graphics could transform election coverage, making it more transparent, engaging, and accessible to citizens. An AI-Powered Digital Education Model offered a glimpse into the future of learning, enabling students to conduct virtual lab experiments and engage with interactive classrooms from anywhere, even on smartphones or tablets. These innovations reflected the versatility of virtual production, showing its potential to drive progress not only in creative storytelling but also in governance, education, and national development.

In his keynote address, Eng. Tanui praised the graduates as true trailblazers of Virtual Production in Kenya, underscoring how such initiatives align with the Government’s Digital Economy agenda. The Commission, on its part, reaffirmed its commitment to capacity building, youth empowerment, and innovation, promising to expand opportunities for Kenyan creatives to master emerging technologies.

The Commission is proud to release these pioneers to the industry and remains committed to nurturing talent, empowering youth, and opening new frontiers for Kenya’s creative industry.
