The Kenya Film Commission in execution of its mandate of ensuring substantial growth of the film industry in Kenya, seeks to provide funding for the development and training of filmmakers.

The Bursaries and Scholarships program seek to address the skills gap for needy and talented students from low socio-economic households who wish to pursue formal education in the film industry. Success in formal education at tertiary level for students from low socio-economic groups requires the access and retention of students in film schools and program.

The Kenyan film industry requires a skilled and well-educated workforce for increased productivity and to achieve its potential in the contribution to the Vision 2030 Economic Pillar in terms of wealth creation and jobs in the distribution and production of films. The lack of proper film training opportunities limits the ability of Kenyan film professionals to develop and deliver ambitious creative projects and stifles the growth of the industry as a whole.

BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS OBJECTIVES

• To increase the uptake of formal film education among Kenyan filmmakers
• To provide financial support to film students.
• To help film students become professionals in the film making.
• To enable film students further their education for the development of the Kenyan film industry.
• To ensure that film students are retained in film schools and programs after enrolment.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE PROVISION OF BURSARIES

BENEFICIARIES FOR BURSARIES

1. Students from families with meager incomes
2. Youths from poor households in ASAL areas and urban slums.
3. Youth Persons living with Disability

 ELIGIBILITY FOR BURSARIES

1. Be a Kenyan citizen
2. Show Proof of Kenyan Citizenship (National ID/ Birth Certificate)
3. Prove inability to cater for the tuition fee
4. Provide signed and stamped supporting documents from home area administrative office and/or religious leader to prove they are disadvantaged
5. Provide academic certificates to at least form four level or primary level for applicants in vocational institutions
6. Provide proof of admission to a tertiary or vocational institution to pursue a programme in film or animation
7. Provide a letter of motivation
8. Commit through a letter to pursue a career in filmmaking
9. Be proficient in both English and Kiswahili

For continuing students, to be eligible for consideration, one must;

1. Be a Kenyan citizen

1. Show Proof of Kenyan Citizenship (National ID/ Birth Certificate)
2. Provide a Student ID
3. Prove inability to cater for the tuition fee (attach fees statement)
4. Provide a signed and stamped letter from the institution supporting your request
5. Provide academic report/transcripts
6. Provide a letter of motivation
7. Commit through a letter to pursue a career in filmmaking
8. Be proficient in both English and Kiswahili

1. Students who are willing to pursue advanced training in cinematic arts
2. Students must have excelled in a level of learning in film
3. Youth Persons living with Disability

ELIGIBILITY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

1. Be a Kenyan Citizen

1. Show Proof of Kenyan Citizenship (National ID/ Birth Certificate)
2. Completed a lower level of film education (attach certified relevant documents)
3. Scored a distinction in the above level (certificate or diploma)
4. Prove inability to cater for the tuition fee
5. Provide a letter of motivation
6. Be proficient in both English and Kiswahili
7. Commit through a letter to pursue a career in filmmaking
